Home to some of the planet’s most diverse coral reef systems, the Maldives is the ultimate location to explore these magical undersea kingdoms up close.
And Furanafushi, one of 50 small islands that make up the North Male Atoll, is the perfect place to start. The kilometer-long island hosts the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, a collection of enticing overwater bungalows and beachside villas set against a backdrop of swaying palm trees and glittering sands.
Its pristine turquoise waters make it a haven for snorkeling and diving – or an invigorating morning swim as the sun comes up.
This is paradise. But it’s also a habitat under threat. Rising sea temperatures have a devastating bleaching effect on coral reefs, while plastic waste endangers the entire marine ecosystem.
For the resort’s management, environmental stewardship and tourism are inextricably linked.
“The travel industry plays a very important role in preserving our environment,’ says Mohamed El Aghoury, General Manager of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa. “We want to position ourselves as a pioneer in marine conservation and promote awareness about the importance of coral reefs.”

This sense of purpose is embedded in the resort experience.
After a morning exploring the island and its surrounding waters, the afternoon is geared towards forging a deeper connection with the Maldives through Sheraton’s “Side by Side” program – a series of curated hands-on activities for the whole family.
They include regenerating local coral reefs artificially by planting coral fragments on frames, which are then placed in the ocean by the resort’s marine biologist. Within six months of being attached to the frames, the coral will grow new branches and start to attract fish. Within three years, the branches will become a small reef. Guests can even follow the progress of their work online when they return home, as the team shares health updates every six months.
Alternatively, there are activities with a more cultural focus. For instance, those with a curious palette can opt for a Maldivian culinary journey that puts the focus on creating as much as tasting.
But it’s not only about learning.
Thrill-seekers can indulge their adventurous side on the water, whether it’s jet-skiing or even big-game fishing.

As the sun sets over Furanafushi – an extraordinary event in itself – any lingering pre-holiday stress melts away. This part of the day is about recharging the mind, body, and soul.
For those in need of a little assistance switching off, the resort’s Shine Spa for Sheraton™ offers a tantalizing escape. Situated on a private island connected to the resort by an overwater bridge, the spa features atmospheric treatment villas, hydrotherapy pools, steam rooms and a calming yoga pavilion. The fragrant gardens and soft sea breeze guarantee a rejuvenating experience.
For couples, this is a quintessentially romantic getaway, whether it’s beachfront dining by candlelight, or stargazing on the cooling sands, with moon-tinted waves lapping gently at your feet.
For families, a magical sunset cruise on a traditional dhoni offers a glimpse of an ocean teeming with life – from cavorting dolphins putting on a show, to majestic rays gliding effortlessly through the tranquil waters.
This is paradise. And it’s worth preserving.
Located on its very own island, our Shine Spa for Sheraton™ offers a generous treatment menu to restore balance to body and mind. Feel free to contact us at Sheraton.Maldives@sheraton.com for more information.
